Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum

Köln, Nordrhein-Westfalen

Cologne's museum of ethnography presents the cultures of the world in a new building in the Neumarkt cultural quarter, opened in 2010. It grew from the collection of over 3500 items belonging to ethnographer Wilhelm Joest, left after his death in 1897 to his sister. The museum also engages with the colonial origins of its holdings, and in 2018 returned a tattooed Māori skull to New Zealand.
