Peter Zumthor's building, opened in 2007, rises over the ruins of the war-destroyed church of St. Kolumba. Its perforated grey brick facade wraps around the Gothic remains and the 1950 chapel known as the Madonna of the Ruins. The art museum of the Archdiocese of Cologne has sixteen exhibition rooms, each with its own quality of daylight.
