Leipzigers call it simply the picture museum. It shows art from the late Middle Ages to modern times in a new building on Katharinenstraße, open since 2004, with more than 10,000 square metres of exhibition space. The collection grew from gifts and donations by the city's citizens, beginning in 1848.
