Fehnmuseum Eiland
Großefehn, Niedersachsen
The Eiland was a raised mound that stood out like an island when the surrounding lowland flooded each winter. From 1776 a timber trade, a sawmill and bark mill, a shipyard and a self-sufficient farm grew up here. The museum tells the story of Großefehn, the oldest East Frisian fen settlement, begun in 1633 by Emden merchants to cut and sell peat. The grounds also hold a smithy and an independent tea room.
