Torf- und Siedlungsmuseum

Wiesmoor, Niedersachsen

How did the first settlers cope in the Wiesmoor bog? This open-air site answers with rebuilt original buildings: an old village school, a smithy and a colonist's house showing everyday life around 1900. Peat-cutting machines and peat boats of various sizes stand on the grounds. Visitors can lend a hand baking bread in the bakehouse, and the entrance building holds a village inn and a grocery shop of the old colonial-goods kind.
