Wienertor

Hainburg an der Donau, Niederösterreich

Two towers and a massive later superstructure make the Wienertor the largest surviving medieval town gate in Europe, according to the facts. Built in the 13th century as part of Hainburg's town fortifications, it still shows portcullises, tall arrow slits and masonry partly cut from Roman stones. In the vaulted room north of the passage, old painted ashlar decoration has survived.
