Carnuntum
Niederösterreich, Niederösterreich
Carnuntum on the Danube, halfway between Vienna and Bratislava, was a Roman legionary fortress with a camp town, later the capital of the province of Upper Pannonia. The site near Petronell-Carnuntum and Bad Deutsch-Altenburg is Austria's largest and most thoroughly researched ancient excavation. It is the only legionary camp between Regensburg and Belgrade that has not been built over.
