Wartburg

Eisenach, Thüringen

The Wartburg rises above Eisenach on a spur at the edge of the Thuringian Forest. St Elisabeth lived here, Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German here, and the Wartburg festival of 1817 took place on this hill. Substantial original structures from the 12th to 15th centuries survive, though much of the interior is 19th-century. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.
