Thonet-Museum

Frankenberg (Eder), Hessen

Bentwood furniture takes centre stage at this museum on the grounds of the Thonet furniture company, tracing the life of Michael Thonet and the story of his firm. The pieces run from the earliest bentwood models to postmodern designs, including Bauhaus-circle work by Mart Stam, Marcel Breuer, Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe. The upper floor adds designs by Adolf Loos, Josef Hoffmann, Otto Wagner, Norman Foster and others. Well-known pieces such as the Model No. 14 and the No. 214 café chair are on show.
