Staatliches Museum für Archäologie Chemnitz

Chemnitz, Sachsen

Saxony's archaeology is told here across three floors and about 3,000 square metres, from the first hunters and gatherers some 300,000 years ago to the dawn of industrialisation. The museum occupies the former Schocken department store, designed by Erich Mendelsohn. Three smaller exhibitions cover the store, its founder Salman Schocken and the architect. Among the oldest items are stone tools from the Markkleeberg site.
