Schloss Colditz

Colditz, Sachsen

A Renaissance castle sits on a porphyry crag above the Zwickauer Mulde, built by the Wettin rulers after 1404. In the Second World War it served as Oflag IVc, a prisoner-of-war camp for Allied officers whose escape attempts became legendary. Some of the escape tunnels can still be seen. The castle had earlier been a widow's seat and a workhouse, and was briefly a concentration camp in 1933/34.
