Schiffshebewerk Henrichenburg

Waltrop, Nordrhein-Westfalen

Where the Dortmund-Ems Canal once had to climb a steep step in the landscape, Waltrop's Lock Park now lets you walk around the machinery that did the job. The old boat lift of 1899 raised vessels up to 67 metres long by 14 metres to reach Dortmund's port. The industrial museum is the site itself, and the grounds also hold the newer lift from 1962, an old shaft lock and the large ship lock of 1989. It sits right on the canals, and cyclists often stop here.
