Ikonen-Museum Recklinghausen

Recklinghausen, Nordrhein-Westfalen

You don't have to travel to Eastern Europe to see icons: Recklinghausen holds a large collection of these devotional paintings, described as the most extensive outside the Orthodox world. It began with 73 icons bought from two private collections after a well-attended 1955 exhibition at the town's Kunsthalle. The museum opened in 1956 and presents icons as expressions of Orthodox faith and painting.
