Schieferpark Lehesten

Lehesten, Thüringen

Across some 105 hectares south of Lehesten, a historic open-cast slate quarry and its working buildings show how slate was won here. Mining ran from the 13th century until 1999, underground only from 1975. It was once among the largest open-cast slate quarries on the European mainland. The site lies on the Thuringian-Franconian Slate Road in the Thuringian Slate Mountains nature park.
