Pompejanum

Aschaffenburg, Bayern

High above the River Main and within sight of Schloss Johannisburg, Aschaffenburg has a replica of a Roman villa. King Ludwig I had it built between 1840 and 1848, modelled on the House of Castor and Pollux in Pompeii, so that people in Germany could study ancient culture. The rooms are arranged around two courtyards, the atrium with its water basin and a planted garden court, and a small Mediterranean garden surrounds the house.
