Painting is the core of this art museum on the Schöne Aussicht, between the town hall and the Karlsaue park. Its rooms hold art from the 19th century to the present, along with sculpture and contemporary work. The neo-Renaissance building went up between 1871 and 1877 as a picture gallery, and since the 1960s it has also served as a venue for documenta.
