Moritzburg
Halle (Saale), Sachsen-Anhalt
A late Gothic castle ruin in Halle now holds an art museum. The Moritzburg was begun in 1484 as the residence of the Archbishops of Magdeburg, then badly damaged by fire and a mine explosion during the Thirty Years' War. Its north and west wings were rebuilt by Spanish architects as exhibition space, so old walls and contemporary architecture sit side by side.
