Geiseltalmuseum
Halle (Saale), Sachsen-Anhalt
Fossils from the Geiseltal, a former lignite mining area southwest of Halle, are the focus here. They date from the Middle Eocene and include well-preserved plant remains, the early horse Propalaeotherium, crocodiles and beetles. The museum occupies the chapel that Cardinal Albrecht had built in 1531 in the north wing of the Neue Residenz, close to the market square. The collection holds around 50,000 fossils.
