On the southern slope of the Kohnstein near Nordhausen lay the Dora camp, the main site of the Mittelbau concentration camp. Prisoners were forced to build and work in an underground armaments factory in the Kohnstein tunnels. The memorial on the former camp grounds commemorates them.
