Klassik Stiftung Weimar / Römisches Haus

Weimar, Thüringen

Overlooking the Ilm valley, the Roman House stands in the Park an der Ilm. Duke Carl August had it built between 1792 and 1797 as a summer residence and retreat. The neoclassical building was designed under Goethe's direction on the model of Roman villas: a temple-like structure on a plinth with an Ionic porch. A hall with Doric columns opens toward the river meadow below. Inside is the Blue Room with its portrait of Duchess Anna Amalia.
