Heidelberger Schloss

Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg

High above Heidelberg's old town on the slope of the Königstuhl, this ruin of red Neckar valley sandstone is the city's landmark. It grew from a fortress into a palace and for almost three centuries was the residence of the Electors Palatine. Wars and a lightning-caused fire in 1764 left it a ruin, yet its Renaissance buildings still speak of its past. A funicular climbs up from the old town.
