Eight centuries of art under one roof, from medieval painting through Old Masters and the 19th century to classical modern and contemporary work. The 19th century is a traditional strength. Modern and contemporary art has its own building, the Galerie der Gegenwart of 1997. The museum stands between the main station and the Alster lakes, and its print room holds over 130,000 sheets.
