Zisterzienserabtei Maulbronn

Maulbronn, Baden-Württemberg

Behind turreted walls and a tower gate lies this former Cistercian monastery, regarded as the best-preserved medieval monastery complex north of the Alps. Founded in 1147, it displays every style from Romanesque to late Gothic. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is still lived in: the town hall, a Protestant seminary with boarding school and a few restaurants share the grounds.
