X Pawilon Cytadeli Warszawskiej

Żoliborz, mazowieckie

Once a barracks storehouse inside the Warsaw Citadel, this building became a political prison under Russian rule, where Poles accused of resisting the partition were interrogated. Today it is a branch of the Museum of Independence, devoted to the national liberation struggles of that era. Among its prisoners were Romuald Traugutt, Józef Piłsudski and Roman Dmowski, and thousands were sent on to hard labour or exile in Siberia. The original building was destroyed in a powder magazine explosion in 1923.
