Villa Schlikker

Osnabrück, Niedersachsen

This villa, built in 1900 for an industrialist, carries a heavy past: under the Nazis it housed the local party headquarters and was nicknamed the Brown House. After the war the British used it, and later the city turned it into a museum. Today it works as a forum for remembrance and contemporary history within Osnabrück's museum quarter, next to the Felix Nussbaum House. Part of its story concerns the Osnabrück lawyer Hans Georg Calmeyer, who saved thousands of Jews from deportation in occupied Netherlands.
