Universalmuseum Joanneum: Naturkundemuseum

Graz, Steiermark

Plants, rocks, minerals and animals are all gathered in this natural history museum in Graz, whose permanent display draws on collections in botany, geology and palaeontology, mineralogy and zoology. Three things stand out: a mineral collection still arranged by Tschermak's nineteenth-century system, a large relief of Styria built at a scale of 1:37,500, and a show mine from the first half of the twentieth century. It belongs to the Joanneum, whose natural history collections were the seed from which the whole museum grew.
