Landeszeughaus

Graz, Steiermark

Some 32,000 pieces of armour and weaponry fill the floors of this arsenal in the middle of Graz, largely in their original state. Built in 1642 to 1647 as Styria's weapons depot, it equipped troops defending against the Ottomans. Empress Maria Theresia wanted it closed, but Styria petitioned to keep it. During the Second World War the entire contents were taken to safety and nothing was lost. It is described as the world's largest historic armoury.
