Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum

Aachen, Nordrhein-Westfalen

Aachen's art collection hangs inside a neo-Mannerist villa on Wilhelmstraße, built in the 1880s as a town palace, its façade modelled on the Biblioteca Marciana in Venice. Inside you will find paintings by old masters such as Aelbrecht Bouts, Joos van Cleve and Anthony van Dyck, alongside twentieth-century works by Otto Dix and Max Beckmann. The core of the collection came from the banker and steel entrepreneur Barthold Suermondt, who gave the city paintings from his own holdings.
