Aachener Domschatzkammer
Aachen, Nordrhein-Westfalen
Beside the cloister of Aachen Cathedral, this treasury shows more than a hundred works of church art from Late Antiquity through the Carolingian, Ottonian, Staufen and Gothic periods. They fill over 600 square metres and are arranged in five themed groups. One section presents the cathedral as Charlemagne's church, centred on the late Gothic silver-gilt bust of the emperor, alongside the Roman marble Persephone sarcophagus in which he was buried. Cathedral and treasury have been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1978.
