Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Karlsruhe

Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg

Fossils, minerals and mounted specimens of native and exotic animals fill the permanent exhibitions here, alongside living animals in the vivarium. The emblem is a fossil giant salamander from Öhningen, which Johann Jakob Scheuchzer wrongly described in 1726 as a human drowned in the Flood. The collection traces back to the margravial cabinets of natural curiosities of the 18th century.
