The former residence of the Dukes of Saxony-Altenburg stands on a rock above the town. Visitors can walk through the ducal apartments of the 17th and 18th centuries and of the 19th and 20th centuries, and see the playing card museum. The palace church with its renowned Trost organ and the late medieval towers are also worth a look. The castle is the original setting of the 1455 Altenburg Prince Abduction.
