Römermuseum Grabenstätt

Grabenstätt, Bayern

This small archaeological museum collects Roman finds from settlements around Grabenstätt. Everyday objects, tools and coins sit alongside maps and replicas of artworks, showing how far the provincial population's trading contacts reached in the first three centuries AD. Fragments of wall paintings and mosaics from a villa rustica found near Erlstätt in the 19th century hint at the comforts of a well-off Roman household. The showpiece is a copy of the Geiselprechting military diploma of 64 AD, the oldest precisely datable document in Bavaria. It is housed in the old castle farm building behind the town hall.
