Neue Residenz

Bamberg, Bayern

This hefty sandstone complex on Bamberg's Domplatz served the prince-bishops as their residence from 1604. The rear wing is Renaissance, while the front wing was built in the Baroque style between 1697 and 1703; marker stones at the entrance recall a larger plan that was never completed. Today it houses the state gallery and the state library. From the rose garden you look out over St Michael's church and the rooftops of the old town.
