Museum am Dom Trier

Trier, Rheinland-Pfalz

Beside Trier Cathedral, the oldest bishop's church in Germany, this museum presents the cultural and religious history of the diocese. Its centrepiece is the Constantinian ceiling paintings: some 30,000 fragments of an ancient plaster ceiling, recovered from beneath the cathedral in 1945-46 and pieced together over ten years. They show flying cupids, Eros and Psyche and seven life-size portrait busts, one thought to be Maxima Fausta.
