Montanmuseum Turrach

Stadl-Predlitz, Steiermark

At about 1,300 metres, this museum in Turrach traces 250 years of mining and ironworking in the village, from the mid-17th to the early 20th century. A full-size model of the Bessemer converter stands here; the device was first used on the European mainland in Turrach in the 19th century. Documents cover the mining pioneers Peter Tunner the Elder and Peter Tunner, and you learn about the Bruderlade, a forerunner of social insurance.
