Meisterhäuser

Dessau-Roßlau, Sachsen-Anhalt

These houses were built in 1925–26 to a design by Walter Gropius as homes for the Bauhaus director and its masters, among them Feininger, Moholy-Nagy, Muche, Schlemmer, Kandinsky and Klee. After later alterations and wartime destruction, what survives is the cellar of the Gropius house, half of the Feininger house, and the Muche/Schlemmer and Kandinsky/Klee houses. For anyone interested in interwar modern architecture, this small estate shows how the Bauhaus applied its ideas to everyday living.
