The Neue Galerie, part of the Universalmuseum Joanneum, shows mainly contemporary art. It was created in 1941 when the provincial picture gallery was split, taking over the holdings from the 19th and 20th centuries. Its original home was Palais Herberstein on Sackstraße, a town palace remodelled in the Baroque era.
