Ingelheimer Kaiserpfalz

Ingelheim am Rhein, Rheinland-Pfalz

Charlemagne had this palace built between 780 and 800 on a slope above the Rhine plain at Nieder-Ingelheim, and Louis the Pious and the Ottonian kings used it later. Impressive remains of the buildings still stand above ground, while most of the complex lies as foundations underground; excavations have revealed the whole layout. It lies about 17 km west of Mainz, with wide views over the Rhine and the Rheingau.
