Heringsfängermuseum Heimsen

Petershagen, Nordrhein-Westfalen

In the late 18th century, smallholders from the Middle Weser signed on for half a year aboard Dutch herring boats to feed their families. This museum in Heimsen tells of that hard life between rough sea and poor farmland. Four buildings stand around an open square with a stele. The Friller Haus covers the fishermen's cultural, social and economic ties to home, and a separate section deals with disasters at sea. The main building has a cafeteria.
