Goldmuseum Theuern
Thüringen, Thüringen
How does gold form, and where do you find it? This museum in the Burgmühle mill at Theuern, near Schalkau, explains how gold forms in quartz veins and ends up as placer gold in streams. It shows how to recognise likely sites: almost every stream in the Thuringian Slate Mountains carries gold, and people were prospecting here as early as the Middle Ages. The practical process of winning gold is demonstrated as well.
