Forst- und Köhlerhof Wiethagen

Rostock, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

This open-air museum near Rostock shows how charcoal, wood tar and turpentine were once made. The charcoal burner's house and two tar kilns have been listed as a technical monument since 1984. The smaller kiln still works and is the last of its kind in Europe. The site produced tar for shipping, fishing and farming until 1979.
