Festung Grauerort

Stade, Niedersachsen

Right beside the Elbe dyke, this Prussian fort was built between 1868 and 1873 to guard against hostile ships. Its hexagonal plan, ten-metre earth rampart, moat and the wall facing the river show 19th-century fortress design. It never saw battle; later it served as a mine depot and an anti-aircraft position, among other uses. Today it is a museum and cultural venue.
