Bildergalerie

Potsdam, Brandenburg

Frederick the Great had this gallery built east of Sanssouci Palace between 1755 and 1764 for his painting collection. It is the oldest surviving museum building made for a ruler in Germany. The king collected mainly Renaissance, Mannerist and Baroque works, mostly by Italian and Flemish artists. It balances the New Chambers on the palace's west side.
