Westwallmuseum Pirmasens

Rheinland-Pfalz, Rheinland-Pfalz

Deep inside a hillside, in a former Westwall fortification near Niedersimten, this military museum takes war as its subject and sees itself as a memorial to peace. Two decommissioned tanks mark the entrance. The Gerstfeldhöhe works were begun in 1938, with vaulted galleries blasted into solid rock; the museum opened in 1997.
