Tränenpalast
Berlin, Berlin
This former departure hall at Friedrichstraße station, opened in 1962, was the checkpoint for people leaving East Berlin for the West. Its nickname, the Palace of Tears, comes from the tearful farewells between East Germans and their western visitors. Today an exhibition covers divided Berlin in the Cold War and the road to German reunification. The steel-and-glass building is part of that story.
