Textilfabrik Cromford

Ratingen, Nordrhein-Westfalen

Here, in 1783, the first mechanised cotton spinning mill on the European mainland went into operation. The Wuppertal merchant Johann Gottfried Brügelmann built it on the English model of Richard Arkwright's water frame, which had been developed in Cromford in central England, hence the name. Today a branch of the LVR Industrial Museum uses the site to tell the story of the textile industry and the shift from hand work to machines.
