Synagoga Stara w Krakowie

Kazimierz, małopolskie

This Gothic synagogue on Szeroka Street in Kazimierz dates from around the turn of the 16th century and is the oldest surviving synagogue in Poland. Its tall, two-nave hall of brick and stone once served as the religious and community heart of Kraków's Jewish congregation. The east wall joined the city's defensive walls, which gave the building a fortress-like role. Since 1958 it has housed a branch of the Kraków museum.
