Südsee-Sammlung

Obergünzburg, Bayern

This ethnographic museum shows how the South Seas came to the Allgäu. Captain Karl Nauer, born in Obergünzburg, sailed through the islands of Melanesia between 1906 and 1913 and brought home everyday and ritual objects, from plain spears to finely carved death masks. His collection ran to over 1,500 pieces plus some 300 glass-plate slides, and since 2009 it has had a purpose-built home next to the local history museum.
