Stille Nacht Museum Oberndorf

Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Salzburg

The carol Silent Night was first sung in Oberndorf's parish church on 24 December 1818, and this museum tells its story. It occupies the former parsonage beside the Silent Night Chapel. Two floors of exhibition trace how the song came about and spread, and show the world of its creators Joseph Mohr and Franz Xaver Gruber, including the life of Oberndorf's boatmen families. The museum courtyard honours Leopold Kohr, the Oberndorf-born winner of the Right Livelihood Award.
