SPSG / Schloss Pfaueninsel
Berlin, Berlin
This half-timbered pleasure palace, clad in wooden planks, looks like the stage set of a romantic ruin. King Friedrich Wilhelm II had it built on Pfaueninsel in 1794 as a country retreat. Inside, early Neoclassical furniture, wallpapers, carvings and floors survive largely in their original state and show courtly living around 1800. The tower room, painted as a bamboo hut with a South Sea theme, is a highlight. You reach the island by ferry.
